Understanding Scientific Literature

The results from medical and scientific research should be published in scientific journals, so the research can be evaluated by the public and other scientists.  There are numerous research studies conducted worldwide every year, but the quality of the work, the study methods used, and the importance of the results can vary greatly. In order to publish research results in a respected journal, the author's work must be reviewed by other scientists and statisticians, who will recommend to the journal editors whether the manuscript should be accepted or rejected, and if it should be revised.  This "peer review" process is competitive but is very effective in ensuring that the research hypothesis, methods and results are explained clearly enough such that the work can be understood, further critiqued and improved upon, by the broader scientific community.

Often short summaries of complex articles, called abstracts, are published in popular media, to spread what might be important results as widely as possible. Readers should always be cautious about drawing conclusions from such abstracts, as many important aspects of the research may be found in the "fine print" of scientific papers.  Physicians and scientists depend on peer-reviewed scientific journals to update their knowledge and to improve their own clinical care and research efforts.

The CanLiv website will regularly update references to published results from basic, translational and clinical research in hepatobiliary cancers.
