Treatment Options For Hepatobiliary Cancers

Hepatobiliary cancers are often treated by a combination of different approaches including surgery, liver transplantation, radiation, chemotherapy, and a variety of liver-directed procedures.  Many patients' situation is complicated and will benefit from medical care from different types of doctors, including liver surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, hepatologists (liver specialists), organ transplantation surgeons, and interventional radiologists.

Medical Centers with specialized experience in helping patient with hepatobiliary cancers, can often provide treatment options  not available at smaller centers. For example, some patients with small primary liver cancers may be able to receive a liver transplant (where the diseased liver is replaced with a new liver either from someone who has died, or from part of a healthy living person’s liver). This procedure may cure some patients, so it important to be sure you are considered appropriately for this option at a center that offers liver transplantation. You are encouraged to seek diagnosis and treatment at a center that specializes in diseases of the liver and biliary system. Some of these centers are listed in RESOURCES AND LINKS on this website.

We have provided a general discussion of the available treatments for cancers of the bile ducts, gallbladder and liver. Each patient’s situation is unique, therefore a specific treatment plan can only be made for an individual patient by their physicians.
