About Hepatobiliary Cancers:

  • Cancers of the bile ducts, gallbladder and liver, also called hepatobiliary cancers, are often referred to "orphan" tumors since they are relatively uncommon,  there are so few effective treatments, very little research attention, and little or no research funding provided by either government agencies or pharmaceutical companies.
  • Hepatobiliary cancers are aggressive tumors for which the only cures are surgical removal of the tumor (resection) or liver transplantation for a small number of patients with liver (hepatocellular cancer, HCC) cancer.
  • Even after surgery, hepatobiliary cancers have high rates of recurrence (cancer returns) and metastasis (cancer spreads to other parts of the body). Once this occurs, there are very few chemotherapy treatments that have been shown to shrink these cancers or prolong life substantially
  • Very little clinical research (research of new treatments in patients)  has been conducted in hepatobiliary cancers: Individuals who are diagnosed with cancer of the bile ducts, gallbladder or liver, have not benefited from the explosion in new knowledge and research that have benefited individuals with more common types of cancer.
