Bile Duct Cancer
Cancer can start in both the extrahepatic bile ducts, or the intrahepatic bile ducts (also referred to as cholangiocarcinoma). There are many differences between these two cancers, and they require different treatment approaches. Surgical removal of the tumor provides the greatest chance for long term cure, but surgery should be performed only by specialists in this field. Radiation and/or chemotherapy can be used to decrease the chance of bile duct caner recurring after surgery, although there is a great need for more research in this area. Radiation and chemotherapy can also be used to treat symptoms from unresectable bile duct tumors, and can modestly prolong life.
